New Horizons for Jewish Teaching: The Arts

The Institute for Religious School teaching Assistants, in cooperation with the Rhea Hirsch School of Education, will focus on the arts as a creative mode for expressing and teaching Jewish ideas and values. Madrichim from across North America will experience the power of Jewish visual arts and music guided by experts in these areas. They will experiment with expressing Jewish themes in artistic modes, as well as being introduced to innovative ways to introduce art and music into their classrooms.

A Song of Freedom

Our annual Academy weekend involves in-depth study of Jewish texts with HUC-JIR faculty and rabbinical students as well as learning and socializing with other high school students from across North America. This year our focus is on Shabbat Shirah and Exodus 15 as highlights of both the Jewish calendar and our Torah. Join us for a weekend of study and exploration of Jewish liberation theology.

Program:HUC-JIR/RAC SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEKEND
Dates: March 14-16, 2008
Location: HUC-JIR Cincinnati
Grades: 10, 11 and 12

War: What is it good for?

Guns or Olive Branches: Is there such a thing as a just war? Together with the URJ Religious Action Center participants will examine Jewish perspectives on the theme of war. The annual – and highly anticipated – HUC-JIR/RAC Social Justice Weekend is a valuable forum within which high school students explore and debate issues affecting current North American life.

When to lead and when to follow?

The best teacher is a good student. Be part of a dynamic and rewarding weekend devoted to exploring how good leaders and good followers are necessary for success! The annual High School Leadership Conference – the Department of Youth Program’s oldest continuing event – is a unique opportunity for adolescents to join together with HUC-JIR faculty and rabbinical students to examine aspects of youth leadership that will prove valuable in their home communities.
